2025 Advanced Innovative Talents Frontier Technology Workshop and Shanghai Summer School Green Energy Workshop Successfully Concluded
08 Sep 2025

After three weeks of intensive research, frontier exploration, and industry engagement, the 2025 Advanced Innovative Talents Frontier Technology Workshop (ALT workshop) and Shanghai Summer School Green Energy Workshop recently concluded with remarkable success. Organized from July 7 to under the theme "New Energy, New Materials, New Life," the workshop distinguished itself through its "Three-High" characteristics: high-caliber faculty, outstanding participants, and premium corporate partnerships.

The program was led by Professor Zhu Weihong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Vice President of ECUST. The ALT workshop also featured an impressive lineup of scholars with recognition all over the world, including Professor Bert Weckhuysen, Academician of Academia Europaea, Royal Netherlands, Professor Chen De from the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, and Professor Zhang Lixin, Foreign Academician at European Academy of Sciences. These distinguished experts not only delivered insightful keynote lectures but also provided personalized guidance through a unique "2-to-1" mentorship model, where each participant received dedicated instruction from both a senior professor and a doctoral candidate.

The ALT workshop attracted 42 international participants from 20 countries, representing prestigious institutions such as the University of Cambridge, Utrecht University, and Vietnam National University, alongside outstanding graduate students from ECUST. The diverse cohort included both promising PhD researchers like Jochem Herbert Minkelis from Utrecht University and experienced professionals such as Daryna Vorovska, Contract Execution Manager at Siemens Renewable Energy and ECUST alumna. This exceptional mix of backgrounds fostered vibrant cross-cultural and interdisciplinary exchanges throughout the program.

Industry collaboration formed another cornerstone of the workshop's success. Leading enterprises, including SAIC Motor, Johnson Controls, Wison Engineering, and Shanghai Hydrexia provided invaluable support through facility tours, technical seminars, and expert discussions. These activities gave participants firsthand exposure to cutting-edge green energy technologies and their industrial applications, bridging the gap between academic research and practical implementation.

Participant feedback highlighted the workshop's transformative impact. Jochem Minkelis from Utrecht University noted how the tailored guidance significantly advanced his doctoral research, while Daryna Vorovska emphasized China's leadership in renewable energy and the program's role in fostering international cooperation. Many attendees reported substantial gains not only in technical knowledge but also in establishing valuable global professional networks.

At the closing ceremony, Mr. Li Xiaopeng, Dean of the College of International Education, reflected on the workshop's achievements in advancing ECUST's global engagement strategy. He highlighted contributions from faculty, students, and corporate partners on green energy research and education. Dean Li encouraged all participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge and connections to drive sustainable development worldwide, expressing confidence that they would become leading forces in the global energy transition.

The success of ALT workshop underscores ECUST's growing international influence in green energy education and its commitment to cultivating the next generation of innovators who will address pressing global energy challenges.
