Major Overview

The Artificial Intelligence (Computer Technology) Master’s program has been awarding graduate degrees since 1990. Backed by strong research capacity, the program has led and participated in numerous high-impact projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, as well as major national initiatives such as the “863” and “973” Programs. It has also undertaken a wide range of provincial, ministerial, and industry-sponsored projects. Over the years, the program has developed distinctive strengths in artificial intelligence, software engineering, trusted computing, and network information processing. Its research excellence is reflected in the receipt of two National Science and Technology Progress Awards and more than 30 provincial and ministerial-level awards.

In education, the program places a strong emphasis on innovation and curriculum development. It offers three national-level and three Shanghai-level elite courses, and has been recognized with two National Teaching Achievement Awards, along with more than ten awards at the municipal level. Supported by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Institute of Computer Technology, and state-of-the-art experimental facilities, the program provides an outstanding academic and research environment for cultivating high-level professionals in computer science and artificial intelligence.

Educational Objectives

Students are expected to understand the current state and development trends of computer technology, possess a strong capacity for innovation, and demonstrate effective teamwork skills. Graduates should be equipped with solid scientific research capabilities and the ability to solve practical engineering problems in the field of computer technology. They are prepared to engage in professional work such as hardware and software development, as well as other related technical domains. The program aims to cultivate qualified professionals for the information technology sector, while also providing a strong foundation for those who wish to pursue further studies at the doctoral level in related disciplines.

Academic Structure

The standard duration of the program is two years, with a maximum allowable study period of five years. Course credits remain valid for five years from the date of enrollment.

Credit Requirements

Master’s students in the program are required to complete a minimum of 32 credits, typically within the first academic year (four study terms) following enrollment. The curriculum is structured on a credit-based system. Students who fail mathematics or core professional courses may retake the examinations or enroll in the relevant courses again. Eligibility for retaking examinations or courses must be obtained through the formal course registration process. Make-up examinations are scheduled in the following academic year together with the corresponding cohort, and no special examinations will be arranged. Students who fail to obtain more than six credits after retaking examinations or courses will be required to withdraw from the program.

Graduation Requirements
  • Thesis Proposal and Mid-term Evaluation
    1. The mid-term evaluation for master’s students is conducted in the third semester and is organized by the respective schools or colleges. 2. Students must complete all required course credits prior to the mid-term evaluation. 3. The evaluation assesses academic performance (credits and grades), participation in academic activities, and progress on the thesis proposal. Students are also required to complete two literature reviews and pass relevant experimental or technical skills assessments before the evaluation. 4. Thesis Proposal: Students are required to conduct a comprehensive literature review and practical investigation to understand the research frontier of their discipline. They must also observe intellectual property regulations, prepare a formal literature review, and develop a thesis proposal accordingly. The proposal must be presented and defended in a session organized by the supervisor(s). Only students who successfully pass the evaluation may proceed to the thesis stage.
  • Thesis (Practice Achievements)
The master’s thesis (or practice-based achievement) reflects a student’s mastery of fundamental knowledge and research capability, and serves as a key indicator of the quality of graduate training. Thesis research is an essential component of professional degree education in computer technology. It enables students to comprehensively apply theoretical knowledge and specialized skills to solve practical engineering problems, typically grounded in relevant professional experience. Thesis topics should originate from professional practice or have a clearly defined application background, and the research should generally be integrated with practical work over a period of no less than one year.
  • Acceptable thesis topics may include:
    ● Design or research of a complete professional technical project ● Technical problem-solving or system improvement projects ● Development of new processes, equipment, materials, or products The thesis must be completed independently under the guidance of a supervisor. It should demonstrate sufficient technical depth and workload, reflect the student’s ability to apply scientific principles and engineering methods, and show both innovation and practical relevance with meaningful outcomes. Depending on the nature of the work, the thesis may take forms such as: ● Product development ● Engineering planning or design ● Applied research ● Engineering or project management reports Intellectual property rights arising from the thesis and its outcomes belong to East China University of Science and Technology. In cases of joint training with external institutions, intellectual property arrangements shall be determined in accordance with relevant contractual agreements.
  • Degree Awarding
Students who have successfully completed all coursework and thesis (or practice achievements), and whose thesis has been approved by the supervisor or supervisory committee as meeting the required standards, are eligible to proceed to thesis review and defense. The procedures for thesis review, defense, degree application, and degree awarding shall be carried out in accordance with: ● The Degree Law of the People's Republic of China ● The “Implementation Measures for Degree Awarding” of East China University of Science and Technology ● The “Regulations on Anonymous Review of Graduate Theses (Practice Achievements)” of East China University of Science and Technology
