International Student Co-won The First Prize with teammates at the 14th Shanghai University Mechanical Engineering Innovation Competition

The 14th Shanghai University Mechanical Engineering Innovation Competition concluded successfully at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology on May 17th. ECUST student Mervin Choon Tzoi Phua from Singapore co-won the highest award as the first prize with his Chinese team members under the supervision of advisor Ma Xinling. Teams from ECUST claimed in total five first prizes and seven second prizes, while the university was honored with the “Best Organization Award”.



This year’s competition, themed “Healthy and Happy Living,” tackled real-world challenges in an aging society and fast-paced modern life. By combining innovative design and smart technology, it delivered convenient, intelligent solutions for people of all ages. Nearly 900 faculty and students from 16 Shanghai-based universities, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tongji University, participated in the event.



Among over 160 submitted projects, ECUST students stood out with their exceptional creativity and solid engineering skills, securing five first prizes and seven second prizes. Student Mervin Choon Tzoi Phua from Singapore co-won the first prize with his Chinese team members, adding new honors to the universityGeng Haoyang, a winning student representative, delivered a speech at the closing ceremony, showcasing the excellence of ECUST students.



The Shanghai University Mechanical Engineering Innovation Competition is one of the key academic contests for university students in Shanghai, supported by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. In the competition, ECUST delegation demonstrated strong enthusiasm for participation, ranking second among all competing universities in terms of the number of entries submitted. During the months-long preparation period, the teams received substantial support from the university's Academic Affairs Office, School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Engineering Innovation Practice Center, and Mechanical Experiment Teaching Center.
