The Chemical Engineering discipline at East China University of Science and Technology is among the earliest engineering master’s programs approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. The program is dedicated to cultivating high-level, interdisciplinary engineering professionals to meet the needs of modern industry. Chemical Engineering at ECUST is recognized as a national key discipline and a priority discipline in Shanghai, demonstrating strong capabilities in talent development, scientific research, and engineering innovation. Building on this foundation, the program is supported by a comprehensive network of national-level laboratories and research centers, including the State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering and Low-Carbon Technology, the National Engineering Research Center for Water-Coal Slurry Gasification and Coal Chemical Industry, the National Engineering Research Center for Ultrafine Powders, the National Engineering Research Center for Comprehensive Utilization of Salt Lake Resources, the International Joint Research Center for Green Energy Chemical Engineering, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Large Industrial Reactors, and the Sinopec Group Joint Institute of Chemical Reaction Engineering. The university is equipped with advanced research infrastructure and large-scale experimental platforms, providing strong support for cutting-edge scientific research, technological innovation, and engineering applications across diverse areas of chemical engineering.
This program aims to cultivate high-level professionals in engineering technology and engineering management with strong innovative capabilities in fields related to materials and the chemical industry. Graduates are expected to meet the evolving needs of economic and social development, possess a solid foundation in core professional theories, embrace principles of green innovation, and demonstrate strong abilities in problem analysis, problem-solving, and innovative thinking.
The standard duration of this professional degree program is two years, with a maximum allowable study period of five years. Course credits remain valid for five years from the date of enrollment.
The training approach integrates coursework, professional practice, and a thesis (or practice-based achievements), all of which are essential components of the program.
1. A credit system is implemented for both coursework and professional practice, with a minimum requirement of 32 credits. Of these, at least 22 credits must be earned through coursework, which is typically completed within the first academic year following enrollment. 2. Graduate courses are organized under a credit-based system. Students who fail mathematics or core professional courses may retake the examinations or repeat equivalent courses within the permitted study period. Eligibility for retaking or repeating courses must be obtained through the formal course registration process. Retake examinations are conducted concurrently with regular graduate examinations, and no separate arrangements will be made. Students who fail to obtain four or more credits in mathematics or core professional courses after retaking or repeating will be required to withdraw from the program.

Mid-term Evaluation1. The mid-term evaluation for master’s students is conducted at the beginning of the third semester and is organized by the respective school. 2. Students must complete all required course credits prior to the evaluation. 3. The evaluation considers academic performance (credits and grades), participation in academic activities, and progress on the thesis proposal. 4. Thesis Proposal: Students are required to conduct a comprehensive literature review and practical investigation to understand the research frontier of their discipline, while adhering to intellectual property regulations. Based on this work, they must prepare a formal thesis proposal. The proposal must be presented and defended in a session organized by the supervisor(s). Only students who successfully pass the evaluation may proceed to the thesis stage.
-
Acceptable thesis topics may include:● Design or research of a complete professional technical project ● Technical problem-solving or system improvement projects ● Development of new processes, equipment, materials, or products The thesis must be completed independently under the guidance of a supervisor. It should demonstrate sufficient technical depth and workload, reflect the student’s ability to apply scientific principles and engineering methods, and show both innovation and practical relevance with meaningful outcomes. Depending on the nature of the work, the thesis may take forms such as: ● Product development ● Engineering planning or design ● Applied research ● Engineering or project management reports Intellectual property rights arising from the thesis and its outcomes belong to East China University of Science and Technology. In cases of joint training with external institutions, intellectual property arrangements shall be determined in accordance with relevant contractual agreements.
-
