The Chemical Engineering discipline at East China University of Science and Technology is among the earliest engineering master’s programs approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. The program is dedicated to cultivating high-level, interdisciplinary engineering professionals to meet the needs of modern industry. Chemical Engineering at ECUST is recognized as a national key discipline and a priority discipline in Shanghai, demonstrating strong capabilities in talent development, scientific research, and engineering innovation. Building on this foundation, the program is supported by a comprehensive network of national-level laboratories and research centers, including the State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering and Low-Carbon Technology, the National Engineering Research Center for Water-Coal Slurry Gasification and Coal Chemical Industry, the National Engineering Research Center for Ultrafine Powders, the National Engineering Research Center for Comprehensive Utilization of Salt Lake Resources, the International Joint Research Center for Green Energy Chemical Engineering, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Large Industrial Reactors, and the Sinopec Group Joint Institute of Chemical Reaction Engineering. The university is equipped with advanced research infrastructure and large-scale experimental platforms, providing strong support for cutting-edge scientific research, technological innovation, and engineering applications across diverse areas of chemical engineering.
This program aims to cultivate high-level professionals in engineering technology and engineering management with strong innovative capabilities in fields related to materials and the chemical industry. Graduates are expected to meet the evolving needs of economic and social development, possess a solid foundation in core professional theories, embrace principles of green innovation, and demonstrate strong abilities in problem analysis, problem-solving, and innovative thinking.
The standard duration of this professional degree program is two years, with a maximum allowable study period of five years. Course credits remain valid for five years from the date of enrollment.
The training approach integrates coursework, professional practice, and a thesis (or practice-based achievements), all of which are essential components of the program.
1. A credit system is implemented for both coursework and professional practice, with a minimum requirement of 32 credits. Of these, at least 22 credits must be earned through coursework, which is typically completed within the first academic year following enrollment.
2. Graduate courses are organized under a credit-based system. Students who fail mathematics or core professional courses may retake the examinations or repeat equivalent courses within the permitted study period. Eligibility for retaking or repeating courses must be obtained through the formal course registration process. Retake examinations are conducted concurrently with regular graduate examinations, and no separate arrangements will be made. Students who fail to obtain four or more credits in mathematics or core professional courses after retaking or repeating will be required to withdraw from the program.

The research work of thesis is an important means for professional degree graduate students to comprehensively use the basic theory and professional knowledge they have learned and master the ability to study practical problems on the basis of certain practical experience. The research work of a degree thesis should generally be combined with professional practice and last for no less than one year.
-
The topic of the thesis should come from the professional practice or have a clear professional application background. It can be a complete technical project design or research topic, a technical breakthrough, technical transformation topics, new process, new equipment, new materials, new products development and development, etc.
-
The thesis work must be independently completed by the professional degree graduate under the guidance of a supervisor, meeting the corresponding technical requirements and sufficient workload. It should demonstrate the author's ability to comprehensively apply scientific theories, methods, and technical means to solve professional technical problems, showing advanced and practical qualities with good results. The thesis can take various forms such as product development, engineering design, applied research, and research reports, etc.
