Singaporean ECUST Student Co-won The First prize with Chinese teammates at the 14th Shanghai University Mechanical Engineering Innovation Competition

The 14th Shanghai University Mechanical Engineering Innovation Competition was successfully held at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology on May 17th. ECUST student Mervin Choon Tzoi Phua from Singapore shared the top honor, winning first prize alongside his Chinese teammates under the guidance of advisor Ma Xinling. ECUST teams won a total of five first prizes and seven second prizes, and the university received the “Best Organization Award” for its outstanding participation.

This year’s competition focused on the theme “Healthy and Happy Living,” addressing real challenges faced by an aging population and fast-paced modern lifestyles. By combining innovative design with smart technology, the competition aimed to create convenient and intelligent solutions suitable for people of all ages. Nearly 900 faculty and students from 16 Shanghai universities, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tongji University, took part in the event.

Out of over 160 projects submitted, ECUST students stood out for their creativity and strong engineering skills, winning five first prizes and seven second prizes. Mervin Choon Tzoi Phua, a student from Singapore, was among the top winners, adding further recognition to ECUST’s achievements. At the closing ceremony, winning student representative Geng Haoyang gave a speech highlighting the excellence of ECUST participants.

The Shanghai University Mechanical Engineering Innovation Competition is a major academic contest supported by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. ECUST showed strong enthusiasm throughout the competition, ranking second in the number of projects submitted among all participating universities. The teams received extensive support from ECUST’s Academic Affairs Office, School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Engineering Innovation Practice Center, and Mechanical Experiment Teaching Center during the months-long preparation.
